01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Choose between the thick, rich sauce of curry udon and udon in clear dashi at Menbou Miyoshi. Diners can pick whichever suits their mood. One person who tried the curry udon noted that it had plenty of thick sauce and relatively little broth, with the aroma of dashi standing out. Another remembered its deep, full flavour. Age curry udon costs ¥960, while tempura curry udon is ¥1,190; the toppings offer a choice, and at lunchtime there is also a set of age curry udon served with white rice, a small side dish and pickles. One diner who ordered tempura curry udon enjoyed the spicy, dashi-based broth alongside the battered tempura. It is an option to consider if you want tempura with your curry udon. One diner said they were asked about their preferred spice level, though the dish itself was not especially hot. If spice is a concern, you could ask about it when ordering.

For a cold noodle dish, try the generously topped luxurious bukkake udon. A repeat diner says the prawn tempura is enjoyable both crisp and dipped in the sauce, and particularly likes eating it with the sweet-simmered shiitake and ginger. The bowl also includes chicken and Kujo spring onion; one order was paired with kayaku rice. On weekdays, a set that includes rice comes with chirimen sansho rice instead, offering another choice for anyone who would like a rice dish alongside their noodles.

Diners who chose udon beyond the curry dishes have commented on the clear, deep-flavoured dashi and noodles cooked a little softer to let the broth shine. Nishin udon or kitsune udon are worth considering if you want to focus on the dashi. Lunch sets include white rice, a small side dish and pickles; the nishin udon set costs ¥1,600. The menu also has rice bowls and individual dishes. One diner who had itawasa with sake recalled the firm texture of the fish cake. Kyoto local sake and beer are available too, making it possible to linger over a dish or two at dinner.

The quiet, old-house-style interior has table seating and is suited to dining alone as well. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and is closed on Tuesdays and Fridays.
